Keratin, a Smoothing Treatment, or Nothing: How to Tame Frizz in Austin Humidity
Share
Every June through September I get some version of the same conversation in my studio. "Sara, do I need a keratin treatment, or am I just having a bad hair day." I have been doing keratin smoothing treatments for twenty years, including a run of Southern California humidity that has nothing on an Austin August, and my honest answer is always the same. It depends on your hair, not the calendar. Some of you need a real smoothing treatment. Some of you need a better blowdry routine and a good leave-in. A few of you should leave your texture alone entirely. Here is how I actually sort that out in the chair.
What a Professional Smoothing Treatment Actually Does
A keratin smoothing treatment is a professional service applied in the studio, worked through the hair, then sealed with heat from a flat iron. It coats and relaxes the hair shaft. That is the plain version, and it is the honest version. It does not "fix" your hair or change its structure permanently. It calms frizz, cuts down on swelling from humidity, and makes hair easier to dry and style. If you have ever wondered why your hair feels rougher here than it did wherever you moved from, some of that is styling and some of it is the water. I get into that separately in the piece on the Hill Country hard water problem.
Here is the part most salons gloss over: a smoothing treatment relaxes wave and curl. It does not just tame frizz on straight hair and leave curl patterns untouched. If you have soft waves, expect them to loosen. If you have curly or coarse, coily texture, expect noticeably less curl for as long as the treatment holds. That is not a side effect. It is the mechanism. I tell every client this before they book, because I would rather lose a booking than have someone cry in my chair three days later wondering where their curls went.
Keratin vs. a Lighter Smoothing Service: What Is the Real Difference
People use "keratin" as a catch-all, but there is a range.
- A full keratin smoothing treatment. The strongest option I offer. Best for coarse, curly, or very frizz-prone hair that fights humidity no matter what you do to it. Longer process in the chair, a real commitment to the 48-hour no-wash window afterward, and the most dramatic reduction in frizz and volume.
- A lighter smoothing or gloss-based service. A gentler approach for wavy or fine hair that just gets puffy and unruly in humidity but does not need a full relaxing treatment. Less commitment, softer result, and it will not flatten your natural wave the way a full treatment can.
- Nothing at all, paired with the right products and a better blowdry technique. For a lot of my Austin clients, this is genuinely the answer. More on that below.
I decide which lane you belong in during a real consultation, in person, looking at your actual hair. Not a photo you texted me. Texture, porosity, how you wear it day to day, and how much of your natural pattern you actually want to keep all factor in.
Who Actually Benefits From Smoothing in This Climate
Austin humidity is a specific kind of punishing. It is not the damp, cool humidity of a coastal city. It is hot, heavy, and it swells the hair shaft fast, which is exactly what causes frizz and that halo of flyaways by 10am. If you are driving in from Bee Cave, Lakeway, or Dripping Springs with the windows down and showing up to work looking like a different person than when you left the house, you already know this. I wrote a longer breakdown of surviving Austin heat and humidity if you want the full routine, not just the smoothing piece of it.
A smoothing treatment tends to help most if:
- Your hair is coarse, thick, or naturally curly and frizzes within minutes of stepping outside
- You spend real time blowdrying and flat ironing just to get through a normal week
- Your hair holds a style until you sweat, hit humidity, or it rains, and then it is over
- You have color-treated hair that gets rough or frizzy between glosses
Who Should Skip It
This is the part I actually spend more time on in the chair, because talking someone out of a service is still part of the job.
- You love your curl pattern. If your curl or wave is part of your look and you are not willing to lose it for months, skip a full treatment. A lighter smoothing service or the right styling routine will serve you better.
- Your hair is fine and already low volume. Fine hair can end up limp and flat after a full treatment. There is not enough texture there to protect, and you can lose body you actually wanted.
- You cannot commit to 48 hours with zero water on your hair. No washing, no sweating it out at a workout class, no getting caught in rain, no ponytail with a tight elastic. If your schedule genuinely will not allow that window, wait for a stretch when it will.
- Your hair is already compromised. Over-processed, recently bleached, or already dry and brittle hair needs to be stabilized first. I will tell you that in the consultation rather than layer a treatment onto hair that is not ready for it.
The Honest Trade-offs: Cost, Time, and the 48-Hour Rule
A keratin smoothing treatment is priced by consultation, because time in the chair and product needed both depend on your hair's length, density, and condition. It is not a quick add-on. Plan for a real appointment, not a lunch break.
The non-negotiable part: you cannot wash your hair, sweat heavily, or let it get wet for 48 hours after the service. That includes rain, so if there is a storm in the forecast, we talk about timing. This window is what lets the treatment actually set. Skip it and you are wasting your own money.
As for how long it lasts, I am not going to hand you a number and pretend that is honest. How long it lasts depends on your hair and your aftercare. Texture, how fast your hair grows, how often you wash, the products you use at home, and how much humidity and salt water or chlorine you expose it to all move that timeline. What I can tell you is what stretches it: sulfate-free shampoo, spacing out washes, and not skipping the aftercare products I send you home with.
How I Actually Decide in the Chair
When someone sits down for a frizz consultation, I am not selling a service. I am looking at three things: what your hair is actually doing, what you are willing to maintain, and what you actually want your hair to look and feel like day to day. I will run my fingers through dry hair, ask about your current routine, and ask what a "good hair day" looks like for you before I recommend anything.
Sometimes that conversation ends in a full keratin smoothing treatment. Sometimes it ends in a lighter smoothing service. And more often than people expect, it ends with me sending you home with a different shampoo, a blowdry lesson, and no service booked at all. I would rather you trust me with the big stuff because I told you the truth on the small stuff.
Questions I Get About This
Will a smoothing treatment make my hair completely straight?
No, and if a salon promises that, ask more questions. A professional smoothing treatment reduces frizz and relaxes wave and curl, but it does not turn textured hair permanently pin straight, and results vary by hair type. You will still need some blowdrying or styling to get it fully smooth, just far less than before.
Can I color my hair before or after a smoothing treatment?
Yes, but order and timing matter. I typically recommend color first, then the smoothing service a couple of weeks later so both processes hold better. We will map this out together based on what you need done.
Is a smoothing treatment safe for damaged or bleached hair?
It depends on how damaged. If your hair is already fragile, we may need to stabilize it with treatments first or hold off until it is in better shape. I would rather delay a service than put it on hair that is not ready.
How soon after the treatment can I wear my hair up or work out?
Give it the full 48 hours with no water, no sweat, and no tight elastics or clips that could leave a crease while the treatment is setting. After that window, you are back to normal.
What if I just want less frizz without losing my curl?
That is exactly what the lighter smoothing option and the right home routine are for. We will talk through it at your consultation so you are not choosing between "frizzy" and "straight" when what you actually want is somewhere in between.
Ready to Talk Frizz, Honestly
If you are tired of fighting your hair every time you step outside in Austin humidity, let's actually look at it. I will tell you if you need a full keratin smoothing treatment, a lighter service, or just a better routine and some new products in your bathroom. For more on what I offer, see my services page, and if you want the fuller timeline on what to expect after a full treatment, I wrote a year-by-year reality check on how long a keratin treatment actually holds. Read more about my background before you book, or just go ahead and book an appointment and we will figure out the right call together.
